KIERAN BOLAND is a Melbourne based multidisciplinary artist working primarily with the moving image. His projects are often sparked by (and respond) to the visual, aural and material detritus of everyday life. Waste and junk are the flip-side of a rapidly evolving age of innovation and consequently represent the underlying reality of our culture and environment today. He has a long standing interest in the representation of the human voice, as both an “immaterial” entity and a form of bodily detritus that finds an independent and often unexpected afterlife through its recorded transmissible form. In his PhD on the subject of Smartphonocentrism at RMIT University School of Art, he explored the decline of the voice as a primary means of communication through the pervasive influence of the smartphone. He has been the recipient of a number of grants, scholarships and residencies in Europe, Asia and the USA. His work has been exhibited and screened locally and internationally in art museums, galleries and other screening venues. He also presents site specific projects in unexpected or overlooked places such as elevators, telephone booths, and amongst the garbage bins behind a radio station. He has been a sessional and guest tutor at a variety of institutions including Monash University (MADA), RMIT University, Deakin University Film School, and at the University of Melbourne (VCA School of Design). Kieran acknowledges the sovereignty of the traditional custodians of the land on which he lives and works, the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation and pays his respects to Elders past, present, and emerging.
