Homework (Series)

2026 Pen and ink, archival inks, copic marker, pencil on 300gsm watercolour paper. Each 114.2 x 79.5cm

In 2009, I began making oversized exercise-book drawings under the umbrella title Homework, drawing on distant memories of a childhood entirely free of computers, a childhood that now feels faintly dreamlike.

The ruled page regulated behaviour: as a child I was taught to write between lines; only later did I search for meaning between them. In the classroom, the gridded or lined page operated as a readymade template that measured progress, a clean slate suggesting a quiet space of reflection akin to an Agnes Martin painting, obliterated day after day through the process of learning.

The absurdly inflated scale of my page retains a lingering unease of the classroom for me, an oddly recurring dream of finding oneself back at school as an adult, unsure what the task is but with an acute awareness that it was due yesterday.
