YOU CARNT (2009)

Early in the 20th century, developments such as the automobile inspired Marinetti to write a Futurist Manifesto in which fascism and anarchism intermingle. Towards the end of the 20th century Carl Sagan jokingly suggested in a TV interview that if Aliens were to be observing the planet earth they would conclude that the dominant form of life was the car and that the human species merely the fuel.
You Carnt is a video featuring two characters both played by the artist: a driver/ mechanic confronted by an eco-styled car parking inspector. Motion control, blue screen versus green screen compositing and other trick effects originally developed for science fiction films are considered as a means to explore the mystery of what might drive the car if humans disappear.
The mechanic's blue screen hued overalls flagrantly appear from time to time under the layers of the car parking inspector's hessian uniform, suspending the unreality of the situation - a situation staged mostly in the Melbourne CBD without permission within full view of an alternatively dismayed, perplexed, bemused or bored public.
