iPod video still |
X: Hey guys, I think the time has come to take down the show. Of course the response has been positive overall but as you can imagine, the noise in the lift is testing some of the residents. It would be great if it could come down before Wednesday. Let me know.
Y: Hi X and Z, it will have to come down next week on wednesday. I'm too busy, working and moving house this week, and N needs a lot more notice because he has some jobs on. I do have to point out though that it was agreed as a 3 week show. the residents will have to block their ears or take the stairs, rise and fall is not a prop for shopping and lifestyle. i'll speak to N about de-installing and let everyone know as soon as i know.
X: These are my thoughts. The definition of the Rise and Fall show has never been a set time, and I don't actually ever remember stating that it was definitely going to be 3 weeks. Also, the key word here is residents. If we were just talking about regular foot traffic I would agree with you about it not being a prop for shopping and lifestyle but this is a different thing altogether. This is life, not lifestyle. These people pay rent and I think that we have to respect that we can only take things to a certain point. This is the point.
At the very least we need to look at turning the ipod off. I am in an awkward position here so please try and be a little bit understanding.
Z: Hello X and Y, I do recall the show being set for 3 weeks actually. This was when we were discussing the possibility of whether or not to include drawings and/or paint the wall opposite the Lift exit on Level 6 after a lunchtime meeting. Alot of preparation, time and money was put into the show and it was made abundantly clear that an integral part of the piece is that all are welcome to express their disapproval of the audio content on the installed walls. This includes the Residents of course. I sincerely suggest that this be relayed to them once again. Should they not want to participate, I hardly think that the experience of the show warrants their questioning whether or not they should pay the rent -given the average duration of a lift journey is only a few minutes. The de-installing is not something that can be done at the drop of a hat so I am happy to fit in with Y + N wednesday week.
X: It is peculiar then that we only had an opening date on the flyer. Surely, if a closing date was discussed at an appropriate time this would have been included in the flyer. Maybe you guys 'set this in stone' when I wasn't present. Of course, I recall discussions about the 'usual' duration of shows. As in, they 'last' for about 3 weeks. I'm not underestimating the time, effort or money spent. But of course, that time, effort and money doesn't come only from the artist. There have been countless hours spent getting Rise and Fall to even happen. Please don't underestimate the diplomacy involved for these shows to even happen in the first place. I don't really know what else to say, it seems that you are both set on this and I feel out-numbered which is not a great feeling to have in what is supposed to be a group context.
Z: Hey X, I don't want this to be a case of you feeling undue stress or interpreted as 2 against 1 here as my concerns in the last email were written independently of Y. I thought they were constructive and in keeping with the original proposal - the present experience and dialogue is all a part of that. If there are countless hours spent getting something to happen on all fronts then I'm not sure why the bottom line on a show's duration is determined by the taste/distaste of the residents. <<
